110 OVERCOME IN SUNDAY JUNIOR CUP

 
     
  The London Sunday Junior Cup competition attracted a massive 111 entries for the 2007/08 season. The two finalists, Clapton Rangers and Eastwood Sports, should therefore feel proud of their progress in the competition.  
     
  The game between them was played to a very high standard in a competitive but sporting manner: they were excellent ambassadors for their respective leagues, the Hackney & Leyton Sunday Football League and Barking & Ilford District Football League.

The match got off to a frantic start, with Eastwood Sports taking a 4th minute lead through Ryan Gardiner’s shot from the edge of the penalty area. Clapton Rangers equalised within a minute when Ashley Bennett tricked his way into the penalty area and blasted home with his left foot.

There was little to choose between the sides as the remainder of the first half progressed, although Clapton Rangers did begin to gain the upper hand as the half-time whistle approached. This superiority was eventually rewarded with a goal in the 44th minute, when Jonathan Mulonso bulldozed his way through on the right and hammered the ball into the back of the net.

The second half was also well-balanced, with lots of excitement at both ends. Increasingly desperate pressure from Eastwood Sports almost brought an equaliser as the end of the game loomed ever closer: a powerful shot hit the bar in the 88th minute but the crucial goal would not come. Congratulations to both clubs for putting on an outstanding game of football, which was clearly appreciated by the large crowd. And well done to Clapton Rangers on lifting the Cup for the first time.
