Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Football

This thirty hour course represents an introduction to football coaching and includes both practical and theoretical elements. The practical component contains twenty three conditioned practices where the game is the teacher.

The content of each practice has been designed on the premise that the majority of coaches at grass roots level have limited technical knowledge.

The twenty minute external practical assessment at Level 1 requires students to be able to conduct an appropriate warm-up and cool down and to set up safe practices using realistic numbers and space. There is no requirement for the student to make any coaching interventions to convey technical points, instead the student is expected to facilitate the session introducing progressions at the right moment.

In addition to the practical component, students are required to complete theoretical elements including Soccer Parent, Laws of the Game, Football Administration and Player Coach Development. In order to check their understanding of these components, students have to undertake a written examination based on multiple choice answers.

There are two prerequisites that students must fulfill before attaining the qualification – Child Protection and Best Practice and Emergency Aid. Both are three hour workshops.

The minimum age requirement is sixteen years.
