The point this Football Festival was about
having fun and playing the game. It was about taking part
and everybody won a medal for something be it fair play or
perservered at all costs, or best goal kick. It was a wonderful
day, even though it rained heavily al morning. No-one wanted
to give in to the rain. Getting wet seemed an irrelevance
when the opportunity to play football and have fun was so much
better. |

Paul Elliott came to celebrate the day with us
(pictured above with the Sherard Rd Day Centre (Eltham) Team and
he was thrilled to see so many adults who are normally so
marginalised within our community having such fun and being
included in what is the nations favourite game. |

The South London Special League organised
today's festival at the beginning of a season's football for
these very special players. They deserve 'A League of
their own" Thanks to Mercury newspaper. who coined the
phrase, this is the name they will be called. |
| |
| The event was funded by CARE (Charlton
Athletic Race Equality) Partnership, who are leading the
fight to enable adults with Learning Disabilities often part
of a range of marginalised ethnic groups to play
regular competitive football and experience real social
inclusion. |

Funding is always an issue
for projects involving sport for adults at the grass roots level.
When we are celebrating the success of the Olympic bid, lets
make sure we do not lose sight of the needs of the more
marginalised and less able members of our community It is
their right not to get left out in the opportunities for
sport that are becoming a priority. |

Very special thanks
to Mick Northwood, who enables this project to happen by allowing the
league to make use of the fabulous facilities at Long Lane for
free. |
