Young Mayor Kicks Off New Term at

Kick it Out Event

Newly-elected Young Mayor of Newham Zuhayb Ahmed made his first official engagement on Friday when he presented awards to children who took part in the half term sports activities.

Zuhayb was joined by Deputy Mayor Councillor Christine Bowden and Councillor Richard Crawford at Meridian Square in Stratford.

More than 900 children and young people took part in football games including '3 vs 3', 'keepy uppies' and 'freestyle' competitions, as well as a range of Olympic sports sessions.

The trophies were donated by the British Transport Police. Pc Zaheer Ahmad, who is chair of the Association of Muslim Police, helped to present the awards to the winners of the competitions.

West Ham United donated a football shirt that had been signed by players. Zuhayb presented the shirt to Lewis Whilnell, a Year 7 student at Cumberland School, who won the prize for player of the week.

Newham Council's Healthy Living and Sports team organised the week, together with community organisations and local clubs. The week was part of LIVE LIFE, the borough-wide campaign aimed at getting people to become more active.

The football activities also raised awareness of Kick it Out, the Let's Kick Racism Out of Football campaign, which is supported and funded by the Professional Footballers Association (PFA), the FA Premier League, the Football Foundation and The Football Association.

Zuhayb said: “Everyone who took part in the football competition were really skillful. I was very proud to present the West Ham shirt to Lewis. He is very talented and worked hard to improve his skills throughout the week. Lewis definitely deserved to be chosen as player of the week.
"With England bidding to host the 2018 World Cup, it would be absolutely amazing if we had Lewis or any of the other youngsters in the squad.
“Kick Racism Out of Football is a campaign which I fully support. Football is the country’s most popular sport, so a campaign like this will automatically have an enormous audience, on the pitch and on the terraces”

Cllr Bowden said: “The half term sports activities are a really good way for young people to get fit and have fun. The week has been a big success with so many youngsters taking part in sports activities. Everyone was very impressed with Lewis. He was so eager to take part that every morning, he arrived at Stratford before the sports coaches!
“I fully support the Kick Racism Out of Football campaign. We need to send a clear message to say there is no place for racism in football or society.”
