Congratulations to Islington Midweek Football League for being awarded England Football Accreditation League status.

The London FA is delighted to announce that Islington Midweek Football League have been awarded England Football Accreditation League status. Islington Midweek is the first league to achieve England Football Accreditation, formerly FA Charter Standard, this season.

The league has been facilitating men's 11-a-side football since 1973. The league currently has 37 male teams playing weekly. In 2021, the league set their sights on becoming England Football Accredited and tackled the task through league committee member Steven Kelly. Steven Kelly has served on the Islington Midweek committee for almost 40 years in a range of roles. He joined via the Leagues Referees Panel, which is still active to this day. Steven was invited to become League Treasurer in the mid-90s until 2006 when he became the League Secretary. In 2017, Steven became the League Development Officer and has wanted to pursue England Football Accreditation since taking on the position.

Steven Kelly said “The League are delighted that we have attained England Football Accreditation for the League. This is testimony to the hard work of our member clubs and the Management Committee. Our grateful thanks for the support of the London FA”.

Paul Bickerton, London FA CEO, said: ‘Many congratulations to the Islington Midweek Football League for achieving the England Club Accreditation. This is worthy recognition of all the excellent work they do to support the development of grassroots football in the capital. Affiliated football has almost doubled in London over the past three years and an important factor in this is the excellent competitive opportunities afforded to players by leagues like the Islington Midweek League.’

Nathan Batchelor, FA National Grassroots Leagues Services Manager, commented: "It is testament to the commitment and progressive attitude of this league and its member clubs that the league is able to attain England Football Accredited League status. The league should be applauded for embracing this process and demonstrating that they are constantly striving to improve, for players, coaches, referees and clubs.”

The dedicated and experienced committee plan to continue supporting their clubs to achieve England Football Accreditation and they intend to create a League Anti-Discrimination Code of Conduct Charter with the support of the London FA. We are delighted to be able to recognise and reward the league for all the hard work that has gone into improving and growing the traditional men's game to date and look forward to working together in the years to come.

The England Football Accredited League is an accreditation that sets an operational benchmark for FA sanctioned leagues. This is awarded to leagues which can demonstrate their commitment to provide well organised football in safer, more inclusive environments.
