REFEREE'S

Assessing Scheme

The London Football Association runs an Assessing Scheme under which experienced observers watch a referee officiate on a match and then provide a detailed written report on the performance witnessed.

The purpose is to coach the referee, confirming where his or her strengths lie and suggesting ways of improving problem areas. The design of the Assessing Scheme, being based on a one-off match observation and a detailed written report, is completely different from the design of the Mentoring Scheme, which relies on an ongoing informal relationship between the referee and the mentor.

The Assessing Scheme is targeted primarily at referees participating in the London FA Promotion Scheme, all of whom have been fully briefed on the procedure for submitting matches for assessment. The Assessing Scheme is however available for use by all referees registered with London FA, irrespective of whether they are applying for promotion. The purpose is after all to assist referees in London to build on their strengths and to eliminate their weaknesses, thus becoming better officials. Better officials have better games, thus leading to greater enjoyment for all participants (including the referee!).

If you are a referee registered with London FA but not currently a member of the Promotion Scheme, please CLICK HERE if you would like to submit a game for assessment. Please remember that the LFA cannot guarantee to assess every referee every time an assessor is requested: the availability of assessors is limited and priority is given to candidates participating in the Promotion Scheme.

The London FA Assessment Scheme is urgently in need of more assessors. Are you an experienced senior official who feels that you would like to put something back into the game by assisting new up-and-coming referees in taking the early steps on the ladder to the top?

Ideally, the London FA would like to see every candidate on the Promotion Scheme assessed at least four times a season (all by different assessors) or five times when possible. The new “enhanced promotion scheme” will increase this number still further as it will be necessary to watch some candidates at least six times in a year, rather than a minimum of three times as required by the FA.

If:-

You have assessed for us in the past and stopped because of other commitments but are now available again; or

You haven’t assessed before but would like to offer your advice to younger officials

then please CLICK HERE  so that your interest can be logged. Everyone expressing an interest will be contacted and places will be offered on training courses wherever possible.

As for commitment, our present team of assessors vary from “anywhere anytime” people through to those who say “I’ll ring when I’m available”. Obviously it’s better for planning if you can offer definite dates when you will be available, but we will try to accommodate anyone who wishes to offer their services.

We are especially in need of assessors in South West London and West London; to a lesser extent we also need more assessors in South East London. Even if you aren’t able to help in these particular areas, we would still like to hear from you.
