Becoming a Futsal Referee

The word “Futsal” is not widely recognised in England but its meaning is well known throughout most of the rest of the world. Futsal is a version of five-a-side football that can be played both inside and outside on existing basketball sized courts, without the use of side walls or boards.

The origins of the game can be traced back to Uruguay in 1930. It gained rapid popularity throughout South America from where it spread to Europe.

International tournaments have been held since 1965, with FIFA establishing a World Futsal Championship in 1988 and UEFA setting up a European Championship. Club matches are also extremely well established and supported:.

there are professional leagues in South America, Europe and Asia with four figure crowds not being unusual in some countries. Three million people play the game in Italy while Iran has over 20,000 registered Futsal teams

Various local FUTSAL leagues have now been set up around the country, with several in London. The FA has established a national tournament, the winners of which represent England in the UEFA Futsal Club Championship Finals. The diversity of London’s population is such that many residents of the capital are familiar with FUTSAL after having played it overseas:  it should therefore not be a surprise to discover that the winner of the national tournament is usually a London-based club. An England national representative side has also played numerous international games.

The FUTSAL Referee Basic Training Course provides a qualification that enables successful candidates to officiate in FUTSAL. The Course is of 10 hours duration, spread over a number of sessions, with an examination at the end. It is targeted at people who have no refereeing qualifications whatsoever. The Course includes both theory and practical training sessions.

Successful candidates will receive a certificate and a FUTSAL Referee badge. This qualification is specific to FUTSAL only and does not enable holders to officiate in other forms of football, although it will provide a sound basis for progression to other courses, e.g. for qualification as a referee in 11-a-side football.

FUTSAL Referee Basic Training Courses are arranged in conjunction with local providers of FUTSAL as and when demand requires. If you would like to be notified of details of the next FUTSAL Referee Basic Training Course when it is arranged, please complete the form below.

Anyone who is already qualified as an 11-a-side football referee does not have to take a FUTSAL Referee Basic Training Course.
People who are already qualified as 11-a-side football referees only need to attend a “FUTSAL Referee Conversion Course” in order to extend their existing qualifications so that they will also qualify as FUTSAL referees. FUTSAL Referee Conversion Courses last for one evening and are arranged in conjunction with local providers of FUTSAL as and when demand requires.
