AFC Wimbledon Become London Senior Cup Champions

Metropolitan Police FC had a dual role in this year’s London FA Senior Cup Final, being finalists on their own Imber Court ground.

However, Met Police were unable to capitalise on a home advantage to become London FA Senior Cup Champions.

The match started off cautiously, with both sides trying to gain ascendancy resulting in a scoreless first half.

However, at the start of the second half the pace quickened and the game opened up.

The opening goal came in the 47th minute from George Oakley for a 1-0 lead to AFC Wimbledon.

AFC Wimbledon continued to exert pressure and was once again rewarded in the 81st minute when Tom Beere followed up a blocked free kick with a terrific volley to make it 2-0.

However, a game that seemed to be over changed with a resilient Met Police coming back strongly and applying some pressure of their own, which lead to Charlie Collins pulling one back in the 92nd minute.

With little time remaining Met Police threw everything into attack including goalkeeper Stuart Searle coming up for a late corner however it proved to be in vain.

The final whistle blew with the final score was 2-1 to AFC Wimbledon. This was their first victory in this competition since 1977.

Congratulations to AFC Wimbledon who received the London Senior Cup from Paul Hanifan of the sponsors Coventry Scaffolding. The Man of the Match award kindly donated by Laurie Aldridge of Aldridge Glass went to Chace Jacquart of AFC. Perry Hanifan, also of sponsors Coventry Scaffolding, presented both teams with their prize money in the Met Boardroom.
