London Senior Trophy Final (Wednesday 11 April 2018)

Erith & Belvedere 2  - Phoenix Sports Reserves 3 (AET)

Venue: Haringey Borough FC

Attendance: 80

An intriguing London Senior Trophy Final at a mist-laden Haringey Borough FC finally went the way of Phoenix Sports FC reserves after extra time in a match which swung one way then the other.

The first half was largely played in the central third of the field and there was little goalmouth excitement in the early stages, save for a headed effort in the sixth minute that Erith’s Arlie Desanges should have found the target with from only four yards out.

Phoenix lead at the interval after good build up play by Richard Sesay set up the chance for Lewis Afflick to open the scoring in the 34th minute.

The second half was much more of a contest for connoisseurs of goalmouth action although it took until the 79th minute for the goal statisticians to be troubled once more when the Phoenix defence failed to deal with a corner and Christopher Page was on hand to sweep in an equaliser for Erith.

Erith turned the tie on its head just four minutes later when Desanges was brought down inside the area by David Adekoya and the forward dusted himself down to convert the spot kick.

Erith’s joy was not to last until the final whistle, however, as substitute Frederick Olafsen met the 88thminute cross of Kehinde Aileru and head Phoenix Sports level.

The first period of extra time was quite cagey although Phoenix started to find gaps in the Erith defence just before the interval. The winning goal eventually came in the 116th minute from a Phoenix corner, taken byCallum Flynn and headed back across goal by Olafsenfor Afflick to head home his second of the evening and Phoenix’s third.

There was to be no further scoring so the London Senior Trophy was presented by London FA Vice President, Tony Sharples, to the winning captain of Phoenix Sports reserves, Sam Fitzgerald.

Flynn’s outswinging corner from the right looped out to Olafsen who hung his header back where it came from and Afflick steered his trophy-winning downward header into the far corner.
