First Festival To Champion Hackney Grassroots Football

Jumpers for Goalposts comes to Printworks London - 3-4 August 2019

FIRST FOOTBALL FESTIVAL TO CHAMPION HACKNEY GRASSROOTS FOOTBALL

JUMPERS for Goalposts comes to Printworks London - 3rd/4th August 2019

JUMPERS for Goalposts is a brand new, two-day festival coming to Printworks London, 3rd - 4th August, offering attendees a variety of unique, interactive experiences designed to highlight the power football culture has in bringing people together.

Rahul KeerthiJumpers for Goalposts’ Founder and Producer says, “Jumpers for Goalposts is a celebration of football culture - yes, there's an invitation to learn and share but we also want to remind people to have fun with football again, whatever your age, background or interest in the game.”

The name of the festival should evoke the joy, imagination and unlimited possibility that football makes many of us feel as kids, but we recognise that this has not been the case for everyone. Football culture can be a force for positive change, creating environments around football that encourage people to enjoy who they are and what they can do - both as individuals and as a team or community. Football is for all.”

There will be talks, panels, workshops, a marketplace, book signings, family activities, stall games, street food plus a live screening of Liverpool vs Manchester City in the FA Community Shield on the festival’s retro-themed Sunday programme. The broadcast will take place alongside a second screen showing a performance by design collective Minute Books, who will illustrate every minute of the game live, before printing and binding into a commemorative book immediately after the match. Other screenings include cult classic Bend it like Beckham, the UK Festival Premiere of BT Sports Films’ new documentary State of Play - followed by a panel discussion with author Michael Calvin, The Football Ramble’s Marcus Speller, director Tom Boswell, and ex-professional Drewe Broughton.

Workshop content features a session on alternative careers for women in football, football zine-making using old football culture photography, and for the kids, the popular children’s football book series Football School and Ultimate Football Heroes will be brought to life by their respective authors. Freestyle football experts will also join us to teach all-comers tricks they can impress their friends with.

Supported by the London FA and Admiral Sportswear, the festival’s diverse schedule includes panel discussion, Watching Grassroots Grow, chaired by Ro Jackson founder of SLOWE who will be joined by Katee Hui founder Hackney Laces, Trisha Lewis who runs Romance FC, Paul Kirton Founder of Grassroots UK and author Dominic Bliss. The group will be discussing the recent revival and future of grassroots football through its successes, failures and ongoing struggles.

Katee Hui, Founder of Hackney Laces comments; “Over the past 3 months we've seen a massive increase in participation across our three clubs South London Laces, Limehouse Laces and Hackney Laces. 137 queries with 89 unique participants coming along. What was most encouraging is we've started to see new demographics emerge. Women 40+ who didn't have the chance to play football when they were in school; and more teenage girls that every before (15-17 year olds).

Other panel discussions include; The making of ‘Herstory’, hosted by Sports Journalist and broadcaster Vaishali Bhardwaj debating the legacy of the Women’s World Cup for women’s football at both top-level and grassroots. Vaishali will be joined by Lewes FC Midfielder Shannon Moloney, CEO of Women in Football Jane PurdonDebra Nelson who co-delivers the Football Beyond Borders Girls programme and featured as the voiceover for the England Women’s World Cup Nike campaign. Also participating is Kieran Theivam, a journalist and women’s football consultant to FIFA during the Women’s World Cup, as well as Flo Lloyd-Hughes, football lead for SEASON zine, a magazine focused on women’s football, fashion and diversity.

Jon Mackenzie, host of the Football Media Podcast, will be joined by Loz McKenna, of the True Geordie show and YouTube channel XO, Fadumo Olow, co-founder of ‘I Think She’s Offside’ podcast, Miguel Delaney, Chief Football Writer of The Independent and Leon Mann, broadcaster, journalist and founder of the Black Collective of Media in Sport to discuss, Beating the Press: Football and the Media.

The festival is open from 10am on both Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th August, with closing times on each day at 10pm and 7pm respectively.

The event will be hosted at Printworks London, 1 Surrey Quays Rd, Rotherhithe, London SE16 7PJ
